Between Them

“You’re here early,” Aiden said to Liam on Friday.

“Friday is always busy. I need to do the schedules for next week too.”

He’d been giving him and Margo the same day off each week and then yesterday she’d texted to tell him she’d talked to her mother and told her about him. And that they wanted to meet him.

He wasn’t sure how to take that. They’d never said they weren’t telling people, just that it was hard for him to tell his family since he worked for them and they agreed to keep that quiet for now.

But if her family knew and wanted to meet him then it meant things were a little more serious than when it started.

Did he have a problem with that? Strangely he didn’t. Maybe it just had more to do with the fact that they were trying to keep this between them so he was wondering if she didn’t think it was anything more than fun.

Guess he was wrong in a good way.

“How are things with Margo?” Aiden asked.

“What does that mean?” he asked. “And why are you at work today? Normally you don’t come in until later. It’s not even ten.”

“My mom has Anthony and Evan again. She is bringing them both over later this afternoon and Aimee and Nic will take them home. I’ve got a lot going on and it worked out well. Most times I do the planning of the menus and specials at home, but it’s better to do it here. I can see what is in stock and what we need to order easier than making Nic do it.”

“Which she never minds,” he said.

“Nope. And you didn’t answer me how Margo was?”

There was a grin on his cousin’s face. “She’s fine. Working out well. Doing a great job. She’s quiet and keeps to herself. She’s well liked. She’s fast and has very few, if any, mistakes. Nothing she doesn’t catch on her own, for sure.”

He liked how nothing got sent back that he could see. It happened to everyone at times. Sometimes people just wanted food cooked differently than they ordered because they didn’t know any better.

“That’s good to hear, but I can see that myself. I was asking more on a personal level.”

“You’re not making any sense.”

Aiden started to laugh. “Dude. You forget I’ve been in your shoes and I know what to look for. So does Nic.”

He sighed. “And what have you seen?” he asked. This would give him an idea of what to keep an eye on and make sure no one else saw it.

“The looks between you two. The smiles. The laughter.”

“I do that with everyone,” he argued. “I’m a laid back guy.”

“You are. But you don’t watch everyone the way you do Margo. You don’t have a heat in your eyes that isn’t from the habaneros you are working with either.”

He laughed. “You’re making assumptions on that.”

“And you always schedule one day off a week with her.”

Shit. He should have figured Aiden would catch up on that.
